Note: JMRI DecoderPro and therefore SPROG II are no longer supported on Mac Classic or MacOS earlier than 10.2.
Install Java Communications libraries
Although MacOS X comes with an up-to-date Java, it doesn't include the Java
communications libraries. These are needed to talk to a command station, so we
provide an installer.
If you wish, use the Software Update feature (available on the Apple menu) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java for your Mac.
Note:In each of the steps below, your browser tool, such as Safari or Firefox, may operate slightly differently in opening these Installer files.
In the Apple Safari browser, you will be navigated to the files, and you need to double-click on the highlighted ".pkg" file to open it.
Using Firefox, the ".pkg" file will be opened for you.
If you're using Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), you first have to configure Java on Mac OS X for "32 bit" operation.
Mac OS X 10.6 can run in either 32-bit or 64-bit mode, but the communications libraries we currently use are only available in 32-bit mode.
To do this, open the "Java Preferences" application from the Utilities folder inside the computer's Applications folder,
then set the default "Java Application" in the lower window to "Java SE 6 32-bit".
Next, load RXTX-Leopard, or download the installer for the default communications library from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/RXTX-Leopard.pkg.zip
(This installer also works for Intel-based Macintoshes running Mac OS X 10.6, even though it's labelled for Leopard). The file name will be RXT-Leopard.pkg, but the splash screen will say "Tiger" and "10.4" due to an oversight; just ignore that) If the installer doesn't start automatically, double click on the downloaded and expanded file to install it.
You will need the Mac OS X administrator password to run the installer.
If you're using MacOS X 10.5 (Leopard), load RXTX-Leopard,
or download the installer for the default communications library from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/RXTX-Leopard.pkg.zip (This installer works for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macintoshes running MacOS X 10.5 only)
If the installer doesn't start automatically, double click on the downloaded and expanded file to install it. You will need the MacOS X administrator password to run the installer.
When the installation is complete, you must reboot the computer, and then return to this page of the installation.
If you're using MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger), load RXTX-for-Intel-Mac,
or download the installer for the default communications library from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/RXTX-for-Intel-Mac.pkg.zip (This installer works for both PowerPC and Intel-based Macintoshes)
If the installer doesn't start automatically, double click on the downloaded and expanded file to install it. You will need the MacOS X administrator password to run the installer.
When the installation is complete, you must reboot the computer, and then return to this page of the installation.
If you're using MacOS X 10.2 or 10.3, you can only use the earlier JMRI 2.2 release, as newer releases need a newer Java environment than can run on older MacOS X. Load JavaCommInstaller,
or download the necessary installer for the default communications library from http://downloads.sourceforge.net/jmri/JavaCommInstaller2.hqx
If the installer doesn't start automatically, double click on the downloaded and expanded file to install it. You will need the MacOS X administrator password to run the installer.
When the installation is complete, you must reboot the computer, and then return to this page of the installation.
Note that you will have to reinstall the driver and javax.com package if you have to reinstall the system software, or if you do a "clean install" of an OS update.
When the computer has rebooted,
Install JMRI DecoderPro
